Understanding a Dual Diagnosis

If your son receives a dual diagnosis, this means that he has co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. It’s a common problem.

Mental health conditions can cause significant symptoms, which your child may try to deal with in any way possible. That can include relying on substances like drugs and alcohol. These substances can appear to help by improving their mood and reducing anxiety, but they actually make mental health concerns worse.

One of the reasons for this is that drugs and alcohol impact the same areas of the brain as mental health conditions do. They can make structural changes to those areas and affect neurotransmitters that play a role in mental illness. The result is that once the effects wear off, your son feels potentially worse than he did before.

In some instances, however, substance use disorders lead to mental health conditions. The impact of drugs or alcohol on the brain can trigger a disorder in someone who is predisposed to developing them.

If either of these situations occurs, your child will require dual diagnosis treatment to address both conditions at the same time.

Why Dual Diagnosis Residential Treatment Is Essential

If your son has a dual diagnosis, it’s not enough to manage the substance use disorder first and then focus on the mental health concern, or vice versa. Because these conditions are so closely linked and can feed into one another, treating only one will not be effective.

Dual diagnosis treatment ensures that both issues are dealt with at the same time. At Foothills at Red Oak Recovery®, we offer residential care to help remove your son from his normal environment so that he’s not faced with daily triggers. This makes it easier for teens to focus on the recovery process and make lasting changes.

At our dual diagnosis treatment center, we begin the recovery process with detox. We rely on medication-assisted treatment for this process so that your child can be as comfortable as possible. This ensures they don’t experience cravings or withdrawal symptoms severe enough to lead to a relapse.

We use a number of therapies to get to the underlying cause of the individual’s mental health disorder as well as their substance use disorder. Some of the options include:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Rational emotive behavior therapy
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

Our team combines these evidence-based therapies with holistic care options like equine therapy, art therapy, and adventure therapy to provide comprehensive treatment.
